The Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy at Duke University
At a Glance

■ Established in 1971 as the Institute of Policy Sciences and Public Affairs, the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy has one of the nation’s largest public policy undergraduate programs, graduating about 175 majors each year. The Institute also offers selective master’s degrees programs in public policy (MPP) and international development policy, and will launch its PhD program in 2007. MPP candidates also may earn joint or concurrent professional degrees in law, business, divinity medicine or environmental policy.

■ The Sanford Institute’s graduate program is ranked among the top ten policy analysis programs in the United States.

■ The multidisciplinary faculty includes 11 who hold distinguished chairs and three who have been elected members of the National Academy of Sciences. The faculty also includes experienced professionals such as former U.S. ambassador to South Africa James Joseph and former Washington Post columnist William Raspberry.

■ The Institute’s second building, Rubenstein Hall, named for benefactor and Duke graduate David Rubenstein, opened in August 2005 and includes up-to-date educational technology.

■ A number of multidisciplinary research centers and programs collaborate closely with the Sanford Institute dealing with child and family policy; heath policy; the international development; media and democracy; terrorism and homeland security; leadership and more.  

■ The Institute is named for its founder, the late Terry Sanford, North Carolina governor (1961-65), United States senator (1987-1993) and Duke University president (1969-1985).
