FAQ

How many internships should I apply to?

We expect you to apply to 20.

Where do I start?

Think about what your interests are and talk with other PPS majors who have completed their internships.

Turn in your Personal Data Sheet.

Come use Internship Coordinator in the Career Services Office.

Use the Internship Office Database.

What is a writing sample?

3-5 page policy memo on a topic of your choice or one relevant to the internship you are applying to or one that you particularly like.

Can I split my internship?

Yes, for example you can do half an internship in the summer and another half the second semester next year.

Are there Duke and Durham internships I can apply for in the summer?

Yes, come to the Career Services office and check out our database or contact the Internship Coordinator for more details.

Should I send out requested recommendations on my own or should I have the company contact the Internship Coordinator for a copy?

You can send them out on your own, but you can also keep a copy of all recommendations in your personal folder in the Career Services office.

There are forms for recommendations from professors in the office and either you or the professor can send the recommendation to your potential employer, or the professor can simply send a letter.

How do I register for PPS 161?

The first meeting of the DC class is the last Wednesday in May. If you have accepted an unpaid internship in DC or Durham you are eligible to register for PPS 161 and receive a stipend.  Here are the steps:

  • Learn about the course at the mandatory information sessions.
  • Receive a pin number from the Internship Coordinator.
  • Register under Summer Session II for PPS 161 section 1 for DC or

        section 2 for Durham.  You must register by May 28.

  • Pay your tuition.
  • Follow the directions in the email message you get from the Sanford Institute payroll manager.
  • On June 30th the Sanford Institute will receive a check to reimburse your tuition and provide a stipend.  The check will be mailed to your home address in the first week of July.
