Internship Handbook for Undergraduates

Career Services - Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy

PPS 161

Students pursuing unpaid internships in the Washington, DC or Raleigh/Durham areas may choose either the PPS 161 or the General Policy Option. Students pursuing internships in locations other than DC and Raleigh/Durham elect the General Policy Option.

PPS 161 is a summer course taught at the Urban Institute in DC or on the Duke campus.

Summer Internship:

You must complete an unpaid internship. PPS 161 offers seminars in Washington, DC, and in Raleigh/Durham, NC.

Summer Seminar:

This summer seminar is taken on a pass/fail basis for a half-course credit. This seminar cannot be used to meet the PPS upper-level elective requirement; however, it does count toward the 34 course credits required by the University for graduation.

Stipends:

A limited number of PPS department stipends are available for PPS 161 students.

The first meeting of the DC class is the last Wednesday in May. If you have accepted an unpaid internship in DC or Durham you are eligible to register for PPS 161 and receive a stipend.  Here are the steps:

  • Receive a pin number from the Internship Coordinator.
  • Register under Summer Session II for PPS 161 section 1 for DC or section 2 for Durham.  You must register by May 28.
  • Pay your tuition.
  • Follow the directions in the email message you get from the Sanford Institute payroll manager.
  • On June 30th the Sanford Institute will receive a check to reimburse your tuition and provide a stipend.  The check will be mailed to your home address in the first week of July.
