September/October
Attend mandatory internship information meeting in September.
Meet individually with Career Services staff to discuss internship plans.
Research internship opportunities in the PPS Internship Database.
Submit Personal Data Sheet and draft resume to Internship Office.
November/December
NOV 1 Applications due for federal jobs requiring a security clearance (e.g., State Department, FBI, CIA).
Students who will be studying abroad in the spring should meet with the Internship Coordinator to finalize their internship choices and submit applications if possible.
January
Mandatory meeting for students returning from study abroad.
All students should apply to 20 internships. By February 1 meet with Internship Coordinator to have your list preapproved.
January/April
Apply for internships. Most deadlines are in February and March.
Get a pin number for PPS 103 once you've turned in your supervisor agreeement letter.
If your summer internship is unpaid and in Washington, D.C. or Durham, you can register for PPS 161 to receive a summer stipend. PPS 161 is a half credit course that counts towards graduation but not towards PPS requirements. In Durham, the class meets at the Sanford Institute. In DC, the class meets on Wednesday evenings at the Urban Institute at Dupont Circle. You learn more about this class and how to register at the mandatory information session. Even though the class starts in May, register under Summer Session II.
May

June/August
Work and complete internships, 350 hours total!
Notify Internship Office immediately of any problems or concerns or changes in supervisor or other information.
For students in Washington, DC, the Internship Director may get the opportunity to meet with you and your supervisor to check on the progress of the internship.
Watch for information on the annual July internship reception in Washington, DC.
If you are registered for half course credit you must attend weekly seminars during your internship. Attendance will be considered for the pass/fail grade.
Remind your supervisor to complete a Sponsor Evaluation Form. We will send the forms to the supervisor listed on your Internship Agreement. You must have an evaluation from your supervisor in order to fulfill the internship requirement, so take this step seriously. Supervisors can return their forms to you if they have signed over a sealed envelope or the supervisors can send the forms directly to the internship office.
Complete your 3-5 page Policy Memo . All papers need the Policy Paper Cover Sheet.
Complete the Self-Evaluation Form and submit it with your Policy Memo.
