On May 17,
1954, the U.S. Supreme Court decided the landmark Brown v. Board
of Education case, declaring that "in the field of public
education the doctrine of separate but equal has no place."
The 50th anniversary of this decision -- which declared official
public school segregation illegal, and helped pave the way for efforts
to desegregate all of the nations schools is being commemorated
throughout the nation.
This site includes information about events taking place in the
Triangle area of North Carolina and beyond related to the 50th anniversary
of this decision.
The site was established as part of a collaborative effort among
Duke University, North Carolina Central Univee
sponsored by one or more of the four universities.
