The Commission on Radio and Television Policy
The Commission was founded in 1990 by former U.S. president Jimmy Carter to encourage democratic media policies and practices. The Commissionis a "virtual" think tank of public and private sector media practitioners, experts and policy makers from more than 20 countries in Central, East, Southeast, and West Europe and the United States. Commission members meet yearly to examine the freedom, role, and future of themedia in a world where new political and economic systems are still taking shape and to discuss, debate, and propose alternatives for media policy making. A list of Commission Recommendations (PDF Files) since its first meeting in 1991 is available.
In addition, the Commission has a number of publications designed for use by journalists, scholars and others interested in the relationship of democracy and the media.
Ellen Mickiewicz, Director of The DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy at Duke University, and Erhard Busek, former Vice Chancellor of Austria and Coordinator of the Southeast European Cooperative Initiative, co-chair the Commission's annual meetings.
