Spring 2007
HLP students receive prestigious senior
awards
Two Hart Leadership Program (HLP) participants recently received
the 2007 Terry Sanford Leadership Award. Trisha Bailey and Elle
Pishny, who both graduated from Duke in May, were awarded the Sanford
honor for their outstanding achievements in campus leadership.
Bailey, a native of Aurora, Ohio, was recognized for her work in
the Service Opportunities in Leadership (SOL) program. Through SOL,
Bailey organized a community-based research project with the Women’s
Center called “Inside Out: Understanding Attitudes within
the Community of Women at Duke.” Bailey was also an active
member of the Campus Culture Initiative (CCI), worked with the New
Women’s Movement, and volunteered in an orphanage during her
study-abroad semester in Cape Town, South Africa. Bailey was also
awarded the 2007 Algernon Sydney Sullivan award, which is given
to select Duke seniors each year for their outstanding commitment
to service.
Pishny, a native of Stilwell, Kansas, was recognized for co-founding
the initiative Summer of Service through HLP’s Enterprising
Leadership Initiative (ELI). Summer of Service is a program that
encourages Duke students to take unpaid, service-based summer internships
by providing them with free housing and a stipend through the assistance
of Duke alumni. Pishny was also a member of the women’s cross-country
and track and field teams, finishing 48th out of 9,000 women in
the 2006 Boston Marathon.
