Tony Brown
Professor of the Practice,
Public Policy Studies and Sociology
Tony Brown joined the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy’s
faculty as a Professor of the Practice in 1994. He was the recipient
of the Howard Johnson Distinguished Teaching Award for undergraduate
teaching excellence in 1997. Tony received a Bachelor in Arts in
political science from the University of Connecticut and a Masters
in Business Administration from Harvard University.Tony had a long
career in the insurance industry and he served as the Chairman and
CEO of the Covenant Insurance Company for almost ten years. Subsequently,
he was the Vice President for External Affairs at the University
of Connecticut and the Chief Operating Officer of Credit Suisse
First Boston’s Equity Division. He has been involved in community
activities throughout his career. While a number of them have been
business related, he was also very involved in his former home state
of Connecticut in the criminal justice system (including membership
on the Governor’s Commission on Prison Overcrowding), and
higher education (including membership on the Connecticut Board
of Governors for Higher Education).
Tony is a faculty member of the Hart Leadership Program in the
Public Policy Institute, where he has created four courses, all
of which pertain to issues of public policy, leadership, business,
and community development. All of his classes require some form
of community leadership project. His emerging research agenda focuses
on the development of young adults as meaningful contributors to
values driven commercial organizations.
Current volunteer board memberships include The Duke Divinity School
Board of Visitors and the national and local boards of Public Allies.
Tony also volunteers his time to consult nonprofit organizations,
including the Durham Public School System and Ten Thousand Villages.
Last, and certainly not least, he is involved in a variety of academic
and student-related activities on campus (including the Markets
and Management Advisory Committee and the IFC Advisory Council).
He remains involved in the business sector as a member of the board
of directors of the Trenwick Reinsurance Company and by providing
consulting services to several securities firms and insurance companies
in the New York City area. Tony’s wife, Teddie, also works
at the Public Policy Institute, where her responsibilities include
coordinating his students’ community leadership projects.
Finally, as his students know, Tony loves to cook. He and Teddie
also enjoy tennis and traveling.
