2006-07 ELI Fellows

Recent Duke graduates Amar Shah and Colleen Owen have been chosen to participate in the 2006-2007 ELI Fellows program. Read more about them and their placements below.

Both ELI Fellows will be working with Ten Thousand Villages in Akron, Pennsylvania. Ten Thousand Villages’ mission is grounded in social impact, offering a marketplace to artisans in the developing world in need of a sales channel for their handmade items. Its goal is to benefit the artisan by offering alternative income generation, creating opportunity for improved livelihood through fair trade.

The ELI Fellows program places Duke students in the field with social entrepreneurs for one year following their graduation. The mission is for ELI Fellows to create extraordinary personal experiences by making significant contributions to social entrepreneurs' organizational capacity and social impact.



Amar Shah

Duriung his Fellowship, Shah will focus on Ten Thousand Villages' merchandizing and capacity building:

Merchandising:
• Help develop a SKU management plan including product attributes such as size, season, color, material, and in-store placement.
• Develop plan to monitor out-of-stock inventory.
• Study the impact of the new re-order system on the supply chain.
• Assist with implementation of holiday merchandise distribution plan for company stores.
• Attend Metrics team meetings.
• Assist with merchandise projects as needed.

Capacity Building Assessment Project:
• Analyze data to determine both specific artisan group and regional opportunities for buying from new groups.
• Develop a spreadsheet profile of active fair trade producers not currently supplying Ten Thousand Villages.
• Conduct research and gather demographic information on different regions/ countries of the world in order to identify new markets for Ten Thousand Villages investment.
• Draft a capacity building plan to inform how Ten Thousand Villages will buy from new artisan groups and double purchases for the next five years.


Colleen Owen

During her ELI Fellowship, Owen is focusing on Ten Thousand Villages' general and E-commerce marketing:

Marketing:
• Assist with the development of articles and copy for newsletters, press releases, promotions and literature.
• Assist in the electronic consolidation of all marketing images and information.
• Contribute to the planning and implementation of Ten Thousand Villages' retail promotions.
• Participate in the brand development testing process.
• Assist with Fair Trade Alliance activities such green festivals and International Federation of Alternative Trade (IFAT) efforts, as well as Ten Thousand Villages' annual national workshops.
• Provide general editing and proofreading support within the marketing team.
• Work with the media coordinator to plan for artisan visits.

E-Commerce Marketing:
• Help design and execute a plan to strengthen the artisan-product connection on the e-commerce website.
• Contribute original and relevant copy and design ideas for the news page, customer promotional emails and online promotions.
• Assist with content management for the public website
