Courtney Crosson is working with Kicoshep in Nairobi, Kenya,
as a 2004-05 Hart Fellow. Kicoshep is a community-based organization
that focuses on issues surrounding HIV/AIDS in Kibera, a densely-populated,
low-income community. Courtney is conducting research on youth information
networks in Kibera and is serving as a liaison between Kicoshep
and UN Habitat as plans are developed for formal housing structures
in Kibera. She is also coordinating a photography club for Kibera
youth and is involved in the formation of the Kibera Youth Congress.
Courtney graduated from Duke in 2004 with a major in art history.
In 2003, she was among the first recipients of the Scholarship with
a Civic Mission grant, with which she traveled to Kenya to tailor
a textbook on HIV/AIDS to the specific needs of East Africans. While
in Kenya, she encountered a health-focused educational puppetry
troupe and secured funding to sponsor the group's trip to North
Carolina. In 2002, Courtney developed and presented an exhibit entitled,
"The Ethics of Our Global Consumption," in which she documented
and researched the products she consumed during a 24-hour period
to educate the Duke community about globalization. She speaks Italian
and Spanish. After completing her Hart Fellowship, Courtney would
like to pursue a career in architecture and urban planning focusing
on poverty-reduction and sustainable development.
