Micro-enterprise for Afro-bahian Youth

Harry Phillips is working in the Bahia region of Brazil as a 2004-05 Hart Fellow. Based at the Federal University in Salvador, Bahia's capital, Harry is working with micro-enterprise organizations focused on increasing work opportunities for Afro-Bahian youth. He is researching the structures and strategies used by six local youth cooperatives that are striving to become self-sustaining enterprises.

Harry graduated from Duke in 2004 with a major in public policy studies, minor in economics, and a certificate in Latin American studies. In the summer of 2003, Harry received a Mellon Award for Undergraduate Research, which he used to travel to Brazil to research affirmative action in higher education. Upon his return, he built upon this research and completed a detailed paper in a seminar on citizenship and culture. He is the recipient of an Institute for International Public Policy Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education and spent a year studying politics and development at the London School of Economics. Harry speaks Spanish and Portuguese and plans to pursue a career in development policy.
