Katie feeds Carol, a new friend in Moshi, a piece of
cake for her 18th birthday.
Katie Mitchell isworking with the Kilimanjaro Women's Information
Exchance and Consultancy Company (KWEICO) in Moshi, Tanzania, as
a Hart Fellow from 2004-05. KWIECO is the only provider of legal
services for women in this region of Tanzania. Katie is conducting
a research project entitled “Children on Children’s
Rights in Tanzania” that will help her host organization develop
more effective awareness campaigns on human rights for area youth.
Katie is also updating KWIECO's documentation, communication, and
outreach strategies.
Katie graduated from Duke in 2004 with a major in public policy
studies and minors in women's studies and Spanish. After interning
in the Service Opportunities in Leadership Program in South Africa
in 2003, she wrote an honor's thesis on barriers to education for
black females in South Africa. As a student in Hart Leadership Program
faculty member Tony Brown's Enterprising Leadership class, Katie
developed Safe Walks, an innovative program to increase women's
safety on Duke's campus. Katie was a member of Duke's Dancing Devils
for three years and shared her talent with children in Durham's
Walltown neighborhood for four years. She writes poetry and speaks
Spanish. After completing her Hart Fellowship, Katie plans to pursue
a career related to women's rights.
