Lauren Marks was a Hart Fellow from 1999-2000 in Zimbabwe, where she
worked with the Oak Zimbabwe Foundation. She focused on all aspects of the
grant-making process, with emphasis on the evaluation of field-based projects
across Zimbabwe. She also worked as a consultant investigating the impact of
HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe and the capacity of Zimbabwean organizations to run
effective HIV/AIDS programs. Additionally, Lauren spent one day each week
with nine high school students affected by HIV/AIDS to collect and present
Memory Books and a brochure entitled "Don't Be Let Down by the Impact of
HIV/AIDS." By helping grantee organizations to document their programs,
Lauren made use of her documentary experience with the Community Stories
Program and Literacy Through Photography at the Center for Documentary Studies.
Lauren graduated from Duke in 1999. After her Hart Fellowship, she worked at
the HIV/AIDS Division of Human Rights Watch, USAID, the Nixon Peabody Law Firm
in New York, and as a high school teacher in the DC Public Schools. She is
currently pursuing a law degree at Georgetown University.
