There were many things left unsaid during the year I spent as
a Hart Fellow interviewing and photographing families living on
the Cape Flats -- historically impoverished and racially segregated
communities on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa. But what
was told on fifty hours of tape and several hundred photographs
is presented in this audiovisual exhibit: the day-to-day realities
of families striving to provide better lives for their children
despite the challenges from a scarred past and present. I was amazed
at the openness and honesty of these families, but sharing these
personal stories had another purpose beyond the immediate experience
of telling -- they hoped to reach a wider audience to help others
understand the challenges they face and the support they seek.

A Year Among Families on the Cape Flats
