Sarah Chasnovitz was a 2001-02 Hart Fellow based in Cape
Town, South Africa, with the Foundation for Community Work (FCW).
Sarah worked with FCW's Family in Focus Program, which works with
parents to become the first and best teachers for their children.
She trained staff and community volunteers on communications and
outreach efforts, photographed and interviewed extensively, and
produced a weekly radio talk show on parenting issues. After returning
to the US, Sarah produced an audiovisual exhibit, "What Was Told:
A Year Among Families on the Cape Flats," which has been exhibited
at Duke University's Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy, the
Bernard van Leer Foundation in The Hague, The Netherlands, and in
Cape Town, South Africa.
Sarah graduated from Duke in December 2000 with a degree in public
policy studies. While at Duke, Sarah produced a documentary film
entitled, When I Grow Up, based on interviews she and Hart
Fellow, Peter Jordan, conducted while traveling around the US on
Greyhound buses. After her Hart Fellowship, Sarah served as Program
Coordinator of the Hart Fellows Program from 2003-04. In the fall
of 2004, Sarah began studying law at the University of North Carolina-Chapel
Hill.
