While conducting research on community empowerment and HIV/AIDS
awareness in Jahangipuri, Delhi (India), I was struck by the stories
and experiences of individuals and families directly affected and/or
infected by the virus. The following photo-essay expresses only
a snapshot of the struggle, emotions, and hope that one family felt
living day to day with HIV. With invaluable help from the research
track at Sahara House, a Delhi-based non-governmental organization,
I met, photographed, and documented this family’s life over
the course of a few months in Spring 2004. Interviews were conducted
in Hindi and explored
the financial, emotional, spiritual, and medical levels of the virus.
I left these sessions frustrated but inspired: frustrated at the
minimal government support, lack of public awareness, and overwhelming
societal stigma but inspired by their passion, complexity, and determination
to live to the fullest.
