Seth Napier was a 2003-04 Hart Fellow working in conjunction with a
local NGO, Homeland, to assess the extent of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in local
communities. He designed and completed a research project entitled, "Village
HIV/AIDS Mapping of Slaket, Otaki, Peam Ek and K'dol Villages," which helped
Homeland target its resources more effectively.
Seth graduated from Duke in May 2003 with a B.S. in biology and a minor in
comparative area studies. Prior to enrolling at Duke, Seth worked and lived
in Romanian orphanage, serving as surrogate parent and role model to the
resident children. He spent the fall of 2001 at the School for International
Training's Culture and Development Program in Bamako, Mali, where he conducted
a month-long independent study on street children and NGOs working with them.
In the summer of 2002, he taught English and served as role model to at-risk
children in rural East Africa. Born in the United States, Seth was reared in
Italy and is fluent in Italian, English, French and Romanian, and has significant
linguistic experience in Bamanan kan (Mali), Dho Luo (Kenya), Veronese (Italy) and
Latin.
