The Conference Format

  • Each student is asked to speak for 20 minutes and then engage in extensive discussion with faculty discussant, graduate student interlocutor, and then the TISS audience.
  • Because graduate students in different disciplines will be asked to do different things at job-interviews, the presentations we hear are varied in approach. We do ask that presentations given in this forum make clear the student’s overall thesis, methodology, and scholarship. In general, a “talk” as opposed to a formal paper is encouraged.
  • Selected students are asked to submit a biography and abstract to TISS for publication. They are also required to send advanced material fairly to their discussants.
