Opportunities
For TISS Members: Since 2003, we have invited members of good standing to apply to be TISS Fellows. This position offers no material benefits, but it is our way of thanking those of our members who have provided extraordinary service over the years. At this moment we have three TISS Fellows. More: TISS Fellows.
For Junior Faculty: Although TISS has limited funding, it is very much interested in promoting the research of those faculty members who have recently entered the profession. To that end it offers small grants ($500) for travel or other purposes. More: Junior Faculty Grants.
For Post-Docs: Between 1984 and 1999 TISS (or TUSS as it was long called) was run by post-doctoral fellows who were provided a stipend and given a tenure of between one and three years. To ensure continuity of adminstrative services, however, TISS decided to entrust the running of daily operations to a staff person. Limited funding has precluded our offering post-doctoral fellowships in recent years.
For Graduate Students: Graduate students are warmly welcomed as members of TISS. Some advanced students are invited to become members of our Speakers Program, while others attend our meetings on a regular basis. We also have one program specifically designed for graduate students - the New Faces Program. This annual conference highlights the research of students engaged in the study of international security and encourages interdisciplinary exchange. Graduate students from across the nation are invited to apply to speak, and local graduate students serve as commentators and attend the event. It has proven to be a valuable experience for all involved. More: New Faces.
For Undergraduates:
Wickersham Scholars: Thanks to the generosity of Warren Wickersham and the Robertson Scholars Program we formed a cohort of TISS-sponsored undergraduates. Wickershams are nominated by faculty members from our three constituent universities and from other universities in the Triangle, such as Meredith. They are invited to participate in our seminars which are generally, in contrast to our public presentations and forums, limited in size and open only to members. Some events are also organized specifically for them. More: Wickersham Scholars.
Honor-Student Dinner-Presentations: In 2001, with the support of the Robertson Scholars Collaborative Fund, we started a program for Honor Students. Each year, a handful of undergraduates are invited to attend an April dinner, They give a short talk summarizing their research and engage in a question and answer discussion with a small group of TISS members. To qualify, the student must be working on an honors thesis or a similar lengthy research project and must come highly recommended by his/her professor. More: Honor Students.
