Course Advising

These advising pages are intended to help you research and plan your course of study in the MPP program. They describe the basic degree requirements, list core and elective courses offered within the Department of Public Policy and provide links to web sites maintained by other Duke schools and departments as well as local universities that offer policy-relevant electives. This list is not intended to be comprehensive and does not guarantee that courses will be actually offered in a given semester, nor that you can gain admission to them.

Electives courses in selected Policy Areas

MPP students may take elective courses within the Sanford Institute, in other departments and schools at Duke, and at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University or North Carolina Central University. There is no formal requirement to concentrate in a particular policy area, and many students opt for a general MPP degree. The links below will give you access to course information web pages for departments at Duke and other local institutions that offer policy-oriented electives.

Loren Crippen, MPP '07

"Sanford's career services office introduced me to a lot of networking techniques that I wasn’t familiar with before. That’s what made my DC trip so good - they’d taught me about alumni networking and how to use those connections... I got to meet people who were more geared toward my field of interest and take full advantage of that experience."
