Environment: MPP/MEM or MPP/MF
This three-year program is offered through Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences. The MPP/Master of Environmental Management (MEM) or Master of Forestry (MF) gives students a strong background in environment, plus the policy analysis and public management skills to translate science into policy.
Students interested in master’s level study in environmental policy at Duke have three options:
- A Master of Environmental Management (MEM) degree in the Environmental Economics Policy Program in the Nicholas School of Environment and Earth Sciences. This option requires 48 units from the Nicholas School, a two-year program.
- Joint MEM-MF/MPP degrees from the Nicholas School and the Sanford Institute. This option requires 39 units of Public Policy course work and 36 units of Nicholas School coursework and usually takes three years to complete.
- A Master of Public Policy (MPP) degree from the Sanford Institute of Policy Studies with elective courses in environmental policy from the Nicholas School. This option requires 51 units of Public Policy coursework, a two-year program.
Duke strengths in environmental policy include sustainable development, conservation and protected areas, international environmental policy, energy and climate, and cost/benefit analysis.
The MEM/MF program application is available on the Nicholas School web site. For specific application procedures and information on the MPP program, please refer to the MPP admissions page.

"The Duke MPP program provided me with a solid foundation
of analytic skills that help me when I examine all sides of an issue
-- political, legal, and economic-- in order to recommend effective
solutions."
