Sources of Funding for MPP Graduate Study for International Students

The following list provides information on possible funding sources for MPP graduate study at Duke University. The list is by no means exhaustive, and we encourage applicants to pursue every option as early as possible. These sources of funding receive many more applications than can be filled and some of their deadlines are very early. Do not wait until you have been accepted into the MPP program, your chances of receiving funding might be greatly diminished.

A suggestion of prudence: We recommend not discussing the contents of your financial aid award with other applicants or current students. Disseminating the specific details of your award is not considered an appropriate gesture; an example: Think about how it can cause problems or a ripple effect with co-workers when someone discusses their salary vs. others; it may cause a negative outcome so we ask you to consider your Duke financial aid letter confidential; we will treat it the same.

To start your search, we recommend the following websites, which describe in detail what foreign nationals need to know about financial aid for studying in the United States. At the bottom of the page you will also find a link to a number of funding organizations.

The NAFSA: Association of International Educators provides a step-by-step procedure for planning and researching sources of funding information.

Another website that also provides very worthwhile information is Edupass: The Smart Student Guide to Studying in the USA. Although this website has more information about financing undergraduate studies, it still serves as a good resource on funding. http://www.edupass.org

Lastly, the International Student Organization in America (ISOA) is a membership organization of international students who are currently studying in the U.S. ISO is the only service provider organization founded and administered by current and former international students, and their focus is on the specific needs of the foreign academic community. http://www.isoa.org

Some funders have their own application procedures, which you must adhere to in almost all cases. If not, we recommend that you first send potential funders a brief letter of inquiry, which includes a concise description of the Program, your situation (mid-career professional), the level of support you are seeking (total in US dollars), and whether you are a degree or a non-degree candidate. A short comment about how you and your country would benefit from you receiving a scholarship may be helpful to a funder.

Simultaneously to contacting the agencies listed on the attached pages, we strongly encourage applicants to pursue funding at the local level. Generally, students are most successful at obtaining funding for their participation in the MPP Program from their governments, employers or international agencies with offices in their countries. We also suggest that you contact the Educational Advisor at the U.S. Embassy in your country that should be able to tell you about a number of sources of funding available for graduate study.
