A Student’s View of Glasgow

When Megan Zweig (’08) left Duke to study public policy at the University of Glasgow, she anticipated a semester spent exploring Scotland’s largest city and traveling throughout Europe. She immersed herself in the city’s international culture, and she did get to travel. But she also came back to Duke with an understanding of how the United States’ political system differs from those in Britain and Scotland. A presentation from a leading policy maker for Britain’s National Health Service introduced her to national health care based on equal access.

“I’m enrolled in the health policy certificate program, and I can apply what I learned in Glasgow to my classes,” Zweig said. “I like having knowledge of Britain’s health system so I have something to compare with our system. I see ways to improve each one. They both need a lot of work.”

Other highlights included a visit to BBC headquarters in London, taking a photography class, talking with her flat mates about foreign policy and attending an event sponsored by the European Union. “We got to meet people in a wide range of policy fields--an asylum judge, the president of the University, and someone with the department of international development. We learned what they think of the system. We didn’t just hear about it from professors.”
